YEAR ROUND FISHING CALENDER

UCLUELET - Summer Months

May 1 to September 30 is considered prime time for sports fishing here on the west coast of Vancouver Island. This is the time when the weather starts to cooperate and the fish start moving through in large numbers. Ucluelets’ location allows us to fish offshore banks, shoreline points and bays, and the protected islands of Barkley Sound, just minutes away.

Large concentrations of chinook, coho and halibut begin to migrate and feed in both inshore and offshore areas, following thick balls of bait such as herring, pilchards(sardines), needlefish, squid, and krill. All ages of salmon and halibut are in the area, making the bite hard to keep up with at times. Ucluelet has the most consistent and dependable fishing on the B.C. coast throughout this time period for chinook, coho and halibut.

UCLUELET and VICTORIA - Winter Months

OCTOBER TO APRIL During the winter months, Westcoast Fish Expeditions fishes for winter chinook (winter blackmouth) in both Ucluelet and Victoria/Sooke areas. There are tremedous opportunities to fish for bright feeder chinook in both locations. Both areas have a very dependable and consistent winter chinook fishery throughout the winter months. Winter chinook average from 6 pounds up into the teens with the odd 20 pound plus lunker. They are caught by either trolling spoons, hootchies, plugs or bait. Jigging is also a very effective method for catching blackmouth, especially when the bait and chinook are concentrated in a small area. These fish are also known as a “winter feeders,” because of their aggressive feeding habits. The bite can literally last all day if you can locate the school of fish. Winter chinook are brighter and firmer than summer chinook and make for excellent table fair. Limits of winter chinook are 2 chinook a day per person with a 2 day possession of 4 chinook per person. Winter rates apply.
